🌳 Zomba TREEZ – Protecting Forests, Empowering Communities 🌳

At TREEZ, we believe that planting trees isn’t enough — we have to protect them too.

On Zomba Plateau, one of the last remaining Afromontane cloud forests in Malawi, trees face constant threats from wildfires, illegal logging, and unsustainable land use. Many newly planted trees never survive their first year. That’s why our work focuses not just on planting, but on nurturing, protecting, and regenerating forests long-term — with local communities leading the way.

💪 What We Do:

• 🔥 Maintain over 35km of firebreaks and trails to stop wildfires before they spread

• 🚶‍♂️ Sponsor 14 community conservation groups to patrol and protect the forest

• 🌱 Support natural regeneration alongside targeted tree planting

• 👥 Create income for over 200 community members, especially for youth and women

🧡 Why It Matters:

A single mature tree:

• 🌧️ Helps attract rain and hold water in the soil

• 🐾 Provides vital habitat for endangered species like the thyolo alethe and white-winged apalis

• 🌍 Stores up to 22kg of carbon each year, cooling our planet and preserving the soils

Conservation isn’t just about trees — it’s about people.

Forests like Zomba Plateau provide clean water, fertile soil, food, firewood, medicine, and a buffer against climate change. When the forest disappears, so does the stability of life around it. By protecting trees, we’re helping local communities safeguard their future — from crop-growing families to schoolchildren relying on mountain streams for water. Our approach puts people at the centre, creating jobs, building pride, and ensuring that conservation becomes a shared benefit — not a burden.
